Aerogel is a kind of material which has developed for about 90 years. They have received more and more attention in recent years for their unique and extreme properties such as ultralow thermal conductivity, ultralow modulus, ultralow refractive index, ultralow dielectric constant, ultralow sound speed, ultralow reflectivity and so on. These have triggered the research interests in novel compositions, forms, properties, and applications of aerogels and related materials, as well as the design of simple, cost-efficient and mass-producible routes. Inspired by their unique structures, properties and performance, aerogel-related materials have shown their importance in areas such as drug delivery, energy production, insulation, thermal management, air purification and water remediation, catalysis, supercapacitors, thermoelectric conversion, luminescence panels, aeronautics and ballistics. Fundamentally it remains a problem why the interactions between nanoporous aerogels and other matters are unexpectedly strong, which affects the basic understanding and advanced design of the aerogels. Thus, aerogel researches are interesting and interdisciplinary, needing cooperation among physicists, chemists, materials scientists, engineers and industry experts. The Conference for Aerogel-Inspired Materials aims to bring leading scientists and researchers together, building a bridge for them to share and communicate their expertise and research results on the fundamental science, technology and applications of aerogel-inspired materials.
The 1st International Conference on Aerogel-Inspired Materials was held in September 2019 in Newcastle University, UK. More than 60 researchers from scientific research institutions and companies of several countries attended the conference for academic exchange in the form of about 35 reports and 12 posters, under the meticulous organization of Prof. Lidija Siller.
The 2nd International Conference on Aerogel Inspired Materials will be held both online and onsite on Jan. 14-17, 2022 in Xuchang, the People’s Republic of China, jointed with 4th Sino (Xuchang)-International Symposium on Aerogels. The conference will be organized by Tongji University, Nanjing Tech University and Sol-Gel Committee of Chinese Ceramic Society, and supported by Henan Sino-German Research Institute for Smart Industry and Chinese Henan Province. We welcome the reports focusing on the fundamental science, technology, application and industrialization of both aerogels and aerogel-inspired materials. The 2nd Conference on Aerogel-Inspired Materials will be an interdisciplinary forum for scientists, engineers, companies and practitioners to present their latest research results, ideas, developments, and applications in all areas of aerogels science.

JUN SHEN, TONGJI UNIVERSITY
Jun Shen is a professor in School of Physics Science and Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, China. He was supported by Trans-Century Training Programs Foundation for the Talents by Ministry of Education of China and Shanghai Rising-Star Program. His main research interests include preparation, investigation and application of sol-gel derived nanostructured porous solids and thin films, focusing on the properties of optic, thermal and electric of nanostructured materials such as aerogels. Recently, he paid more attention to the application and industrialization of aerogels and aerogel composites in energy saving and environmental protection, such as super thermal insulations, solar cell technology, super capacitors, water and air purification.
Prof. Lidija SILLER, Newcastle University, United Kingdom
Prof. Lidija Siller is a professor of Nanoscale Science for the School of Engineering, Newcastle University. Her research interests include Nanoscale science and nanotechnology, CO2 capture and storage, Aerogel materials, Thermoelctrics, Supercapacitors, Nanotoxicology, Physics and Chemistry at Solid Surfaces; Optical, electronic and structural properties of nanoscale materials; Electron and Photon stimulated desorption in ices.
XIAODONG SHEN, Nanjing Technology University
Xiaodong Shen is a professor of School of Material Science and Engineering, Nanjing Technology University, Nanjing. He is the chief scientist of National "973" Program of China, Head of Research Institute of New Materials, Nanjing Technology University (Suqian), Head of Research Institute of Advanced Silicon-based Materials, Nanjing Technology University, team leader of the Ministry of Education innovation, "national pacesetter project", etc. He has been engaged in the basic research of high-performance cement materials, the development of comprehensive utilization technology of solid waste and the preparation and application of inorganic new materials. He has made many innovative achievements in the basic research and preparation process of high gelling cement clinker, energy saving and emission reduction of cement industry and green manufacturing of cement, comprehensive utilization of industrial solid waste and research and industrialization of high-performance aerogel new materials。
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Irina SMIRNOVA, Hamburg University of Technology
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Irina Smirnova is a professor of Research Center Integrated Biotechnology and Process Engineering, University of Technology Hamburg. She is the head of the Institute of Thermal Separation Processes, vice-president research of the TUHH. Her research interests include tailor-made organic, inorganic and hybrid nano- and mesoporous materials, selective fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass, development of molecular methods for the design and optimization of separation processes.
